GA Inmate Fatally Shoots Prison Worker, Turns Gun On Self: GDC

A Georgia inmate, who was serving 20 years, was accused of shooting to death a Smith State Prison worker before dying by suicide.

GLENNVILLE, GA — An inmate accused of shooting and killing an employee Sunday at Smith State Prison died by suicide, the Georgia Department of Corrections said.

The shooting happened around 4:30 a.m. The GDC said Jaydrekus Hart fatally shot Aureon Shavea Grace, 24, while working in the prison kitchen. Authorities said Hart then turned the gun on himself and died at a local hospital.

Authorities did not say how the gun got inside of the prison, but they did say the gun is in the custody of the GDC.

Hart was serving 20 years for voluntary manslaughter out of Carroll County with a maximum release date of June 2043.

"A complete and thorough investigation of what led up to this tragic incident will be carried out," authorities said in a news release.
