Trapped Drivers Rescued, Flash Flood Warning Expired In Metro ATL

A media report says a downed tree trapped a woman against a sofa while firefighters in a boat saved two stranded drivers in Atlanta.

ATLANTA, GA — Some metro Atlanta drivers had to reportedly be rescued Wednesday after being trapped by flooding waters or downed trees.

Additionally, a flash flood warning issued for multiple metro counties has expired.

Clayton, DeKalb, northeast Fayette, central Fulton, central Gwinnett, northwest Henry and west central Rockdale counties were all under the flash flood warning. The alert expired at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Around 6:30 a.m., the weather service said between 1 and 3 inches of rainfall had come down into the area, and flash flooding was expected to begin.

"Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles," the weather service said.

Fox 5 Atlanta reported downed trees and flooding had some residents in the metro trapped Wednesday. Atlanta firefighters used a boat to save two drivers who were stranded near Hutchens Road, the outlet reported.

Then, four people had to be rescued after a tree fell onto their Flagstone Drive home, leaving a woman stuck against a sofa, Fox 5 reported.

St. Andrew Catholic Church in Roswell shared a 23-second video on Facebook that showed massive flooding.

"If you are visiting us today, come either on a canoe or park by the chapel," the church said.

The weather service's forecast has the rain clearing out by nightfall Wednesday before returning Friday afternoon and lasting through Saturday night.

Around 9 a.m., the National Weather Service predicted the following detailed forecast:

Today: A 40 percent chance of showers, mainly before 1 p.m. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 64. Northeast wind 5-10 mph becoming north in the afternoon.

Tonight: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 51. Northwest wind around 5 mph.

Thursday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 72. Northwest wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the afternoon.

Thursday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 54. West wind around 5 mph becoming east in the evening.

Friday: A 20 percent chance of showers after 1 p.m. Cloudy, with a high near 69. Southeast wind 5-15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.

Friday Night: Showers likely, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 1 a.m. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Low around 56. Chance of precipitation is 100 percent.

Saturday: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm before 1 p.m., then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1 p.m. High near 66. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent.

Saturday Night: A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before 1 a.m. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 45.

Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 58.

Sunday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 39.

Monday: Sunny, with a high near 63.

Monday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 38.

Tuesday: Sunny, with a high near 69.
