Barrow Weather: Heavy Storms Could Impact Holiday Travel

Holiday travel in and around Barrow County will be sloppy Tuesday and Wednesday, with severe weather possible by Christmas Eve.

The National Weather Service in Peachtree City, Ga., posted the following updated information on its website:

Sloppy travel conditions are likely Tuesday and Wednesday across much of Georgia as a potent storm system impacts the area. Isolated strong to severe thunderstorms are possible each day, so keep checking the forecast for updates. In addition, locally heavy rainfall will reduce driving visibilities, create ponding water in low lying areas and create slick roadways. Stay safe out there and Happy Holidays!

Forecasters say thunderstorms are expected Tuesday as a warm front pushes northward. The worst storms are expected across eastern and south-central Georgia and isolated thunderstorms are expected in north Georgia.

The severe threat broadens to include virtually all of north Georgia on Wednesday as a cold front sweeps eastward across the state.

The greatest chance for severe weather in Barrow County is noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday, according to the weather service.

Damaging winds gusts, isolated tornadoes and locally heavy rain of 2 to 4 inches are possible. The heaviest rain is expected to fall Tuesday night.

Holiday travel might be impacted by slick roads, reduced visibility, ponding of water and gusty winds, the weather service said.

The rough weather should be out of Georgia by Christmas Day, with sunny conditions and high temps in the low 50s throughout north Georgia.
