Georgia Officer Run Over By Woman Escaping Arrest: Police

Officer Marc Lofton, of the Statham (Ga.) Police Department, sustained a concussion and possible torn Achilles tendon, authorities say.

STATHAM, GA β€” Police in Georgia are looking for the woman they say ran over a police officer and dragged him with her car during an arrest attempt.

On Saturday, Officer Marc Lofton of the Statham Police Department in Barrow County made a traffic stop on Dooley Town Road at about 5:08 p.m.

As a result of the stop, Lofton attempted to arrest a woman named Jessica Fox, according to Statham Police Chief Allan Johnston. Fox had outstanding warrants for previous drug charges.

Fox physically resisted arrest, Johnston said in a statement posted on Facebook, and, during the struggle, put her car back into drive and began to drive off.

Lofton, who had attempted to subdue Fox using his Taser, got entangled with the car, on which the driver's side door was still open, and was dragged across Dooley Town Road. Fox then ran over both of Lofton's legs with the back left wheel of the 2010 Pontiac G6, Johnston said in the statement.

Fox allegedly fled the scene. Police later found the car on Corbin Drive.

Multiple felony warrants have been filed for Fox, who remained at large as of Tuesday morning.

Lofton was taken to Athens Regional Medical Center. On Monday, Johnston said it was confirmed that Lofton suffered a concussion and a possible tear of his Achilles tendon.
