Here are the top three stories in Dalton today:

  1. The White House announced over the weekend that Vice President Kamala Harris will be in Dalton on Thursday to visit the Qcells manufacturing facility and "highlight how the Biden-Harris Administration’s Investing in America agenda is building a clean energy economy that works for all and creating good-paying jobs." Additional information about Harris' travel plans has yet to be released. Harris recently visited the Peach State only two months ago when she spoke at Georgia Tech. (11Alive.com WXIA)
  2. The new nuclear generator unit at Vogtle Unit 3 generated electricity for the first time and successfully connected to the electric grid, announced Georgia Power over the weekend. Barring any further issues, Unit 3 will be ready to go into service in either May or June of this year. In addition to Unit 4, which last month began its last series of major testing before having fuel added for the first time, are both co-owned by multiple companies, including Dalton Utilities.   3. Dalton State College is continuing its commitment to expanding mental health services and promoting a healthy, safe culture for students on campus. Jenny Guy, the associate director of counseling at the college's Counseling Center, said of Dalton State's efforts, "With the support from the University System of Georgia, Dalton State has been able to decrease the wait list for counseling services on campus and offer further individualized care to meet the needs of our students.” In addition to two licensed counselors at the Counseling Center, Dalton State offers both in-person and telehealth counseling options, a 24/7 hotline, a support program, and training for faculty and staff to learn how to recognize signs of a student suffering from a mental health crisis.
