5 Displaced After Lawrenceville House Fire

Two cats were unable to escape the fire Tuesday.

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA — Five people are displaced following a Tuesday morning fire in the 3000 block of Sir Gregory Manor, according to Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services.

A bystander reported the fire at the single-story house, and fire crews responded around 7 a.m., according to a news release from the department Tuesday afternoon.

The accidental fire originated in the home's carport. There were two cats inside of the home that were unable to escape but the people living in the home did escape, fire officials said. The cats were found by fire crews, and their status is unknown.

Two people were taken to the hospital for injuries that were not life threatening while one person was assessed and released at the scene, fire officials said.

Smoking material was found in the carport. A woman resident told the fire department the occupants smoke in the carport and she was unsure if someone had done so Tuesday, fire officials said.

The woman had been drinking coffee when she opened the carport's door to smoke and flames, fire officials said.

The fire caused heavy damage to the carpot, kitchen and main floor of the house, fire officials said. The basement suffered extensive water, smoke and fire damage.

The homeowner reported there were no working smoke alarms in the house; but, a bystander told fire crews they heard audible fire alarms at the time of the fire, according to the fire department.

The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents.
