Gwinnett Correctional Officer Killed In Shooting; Suspect Sought

The correctional officer who was killed Tuesday has been with the Gwinnett Correctional Center for more than 10 years.

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA — A senior correctional officer was killed in the shooting at the Gwinnett Correctional Center on Hi Hope Road Tuesday morning and the suspect remains at large.

Authorities identified the officer as Scott Riner, 59, of Dacula.

Police said Riner was shot around 6:20 a.m. in the center's parking lot. Police told Patch Riner had an encounter with the suspect. Police did not give further details on the nature of the encounter.

Riner was employed with the correctional center for more than 10 years, police said.

"The Gwinnett Police Department would like to extend condolences to his family, friends and coworkers," police said in a news release.

No arrests have been made in the case, and police said detectives are exploring all motives. Police released a surveillance photo that shows the suspect.
