Riner was with the Gwinnett Correctional Center for more than 10 years. Gwinnett County Police said Riner was married to wife Elana, who is a member of the Gwinnett Department of Fire and Emergency Services, for 22 years.

Riner had a son, daughter and one grandson, police said.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing and watching Youtube videos with his grandson, according to his obituary.

"Best described in his later years as an 'old soul,' Scott enjoyed the simpler things and would love to reminisce of times spent with his sister, brother, aunts, uncles and cousins who were all very important to him," his obituary read.

It is the family's request that donations be made to the Georgia Department of National Resources Foundation in Riner's honor in lieu of flowers, police said.
