Lawrenceville Approves New Designation Of State Routes

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA – The City of Lawrenceville Mayor and Council approved a proposal to re-designate State Routes 8, 120, 20, 29 and 124 off of Pike and Crogan Streets in the Downtown District. The highly trafficked state routes would be moved to roads that by-pass the Downtown area in favor of a more walkable Downtown district.

City Manager Chuck Warbington said, “We have simply redirected the State Routes away from our downtown. This encourages a reduction in freight traffic and pass through traffic in our immediate downtown and will create a more pedestrian friendly environment for that area. This isn’t a construction project and no roads are changing, only the directional signage of these State Routes.”

According to the proposal presented in the November 14 work session, all the proposed State Route changes would flow around the downtown via Jackson Street on the East and North end and Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road on the West and South end. The City is working jointly with Gwinnett DOT and Georgia DOT to implement the re-designations.

Warbington went on to say, “Our partners at the Gwinnett DOT and State DOT offices have been incredible to work with on this project from the beginning. We are grateful to them for their support and diligence in helping us to efficiently realize this initiative.”

GDOT (Georgia Department of Transportation) will make the necessary signage adjustments to reroute traffic following those State Routes down the alternate roads.
