Cobb County Closes Offices As Crews Hit The Road

Friday's snowfall is causing hazards on local roads, say Cobb County officials.

MARIETTA, GA — With snow falling, Cobb County closed its government offices at noon Friday as transportation officials called in crews to spread salt on local roads. Officials also urged people not already on the roads to avoid going out until the snow moves away.

By 12:30 p.m., traffic had slowed to a crawl on many of the county’s roadways and crews manned trucks with salt to head out to the worse areas, according to a Cobb statement.

The Cobb Department of Transportation planned to run full shifts until 2 p.m. Saturday, concerned that falling temperatures could cause icing. The DOT said its 15 trucks will treat much of the county’s 2,500 miles of roadways, including state highways.

The snow is expected to cause headaches for evening commuters, the county said. Traffic maps at cobbcommute.org showed many Cobb thoroughfares either running very slow or at a standstill.

Besides the county government, the Cobb court system also closed early, as well as city offices in Marietta and Smyrna. Cobb County libraries closed at noon and will watch the conditions to determine if they’ll reopen on Saturday.
