MARIETTA, GA — A new affordable senior living development is expected to break ground by the end of the year, Marietta Housing Authority officials said.

Atlanta-based Prestwick Companies will build the 76-unit project, called "The Banberry," at the vacant site of the former AMF Marietta Lanes bowling alley on Cobb Parkway, the Marietta Daily Journal reported. The project successfully qualified for a low-income housing tax incentive, also known as Section 42 housing.

The property is being tested for asbestos before demolition on the bowling alley can start, MHA Development Director Noel Taylor said at an MHA meeting last week.

Construction should begin "right away" once the structure is demolished and the MHA closes the sale on the property. Taylor said the closing could be delayed as the MHA waits for "more favorable credit" pricing from its lenders.
