Athenahealth To Bring 500 More Jobs To Midtown

Tech company based at Ponce City Market vows to expand Atlanta workforce to nearly 1,000.

ATLANTA, GA -- Health care tech company Athenahealth announced Wednesday that it will add 500 jobs and double its operations at Ponce City Market.

The move means Athenahealth will add 40,000 square feet to the 98,000 square feet it already controls at the Ponce De Leon site.

The Massachusetts-based company entered the Atlanta market in 2013, creating 500 jobs at the outset. The expanded workforce, slated to be hired by 2018, will buoy Midtown's already bustling reputation as a work place destination, Mayor Kasim Reed said.

“The company’s expansion at Ponce City Market cements Atlanta’s status as the center of healthcare IT in the U.S. Atlanta is home to a talented workforce and a thriving innovation ecosystem, and offers an unmatched environment for rapid growth," Reed said in a news release. "Leading companies like Athenahealth are taking advantage.”

Last year ended with distinguished accolades for Ponce City Market, the crown jewel in Midtown's continuing revitalization. The building, which spent much of its past as a Sears warehouse, was named late last year to the National Register of Historic Places.

The commitment from Athenahealth, a firm that provides electronic services such as billing and payroll to hospitals and other medical facilities, only bolsters the Old Fourth Ward's viability.

“As we work to drive meaningful and measurable results for our growing base of clients on our network, we are ever-expanding to meet their needs. Strategic sites in key urban markets across the country -- such as Atlanta -- open up possibilities, helps us attract exciting new talent and resources, and affords us opportunities to host more prospects and clients,” Todd Haedrich, vice president and general manager, Small Groups at Athenahealth, said in the news release.
