Georgia Weather: When Will It Warm Up?

There is hope in metro Atlanta for a warmer day, but the weekend forecast calls for some more wintry weather before we get there.

ATLANTA, GA — Metro Atlantans awoke Friday to the coldest morning yet this winter, with temperatures still in the teens and one question on many of their minds — when will it get warmer?

There is some hope in that regard, with forecasts calling for more typical Georgia-winter weather by early next week. But we may have some messy days, complete with a wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain, before we get there.

A wind-chill advisory from the National Weather Service remained in effect for north and central Georgia early Friday, where the temperature was still a frosty 17 degrees around 8:30 a.m. Wind chills as low as -10 degrees were possible in areas of north Georgia above a line from Coosa to Woodstock to Cleveland.

The weather service also was warning of dangerous fire conditions caused by low relative humidity across parts of central Georgia.

Looking ahead to this weekend, there is a chance of wintry mix across north Georgia late Sunday night and Monday morning as yet another frontal system moves into the area, the weather service says. The chance of precipitation is 70 percent Sunday night and 80 percent Monday morning — but the low temperature that night will barely hit freezing, getting down to 32.

Monday night's low is only forecast to get down to 40 degrees and things will keep warming up from there. By Tuesday and Wednesday, we're looking at high temperatures of 52 degrees both days, the weather service says.
