Handcrafted Homes, Inc. Wins a Regional NARI CotY Award

The home remodeling firm won a Contractor of the Year award for transforming a client's Midtown garage into a wood carving studio.

A beautiful and imaginative Carving Studio created out of an under-utilized garage has won a Southeastern Regional CotY (Contractor of the Year) Award for Atlanta-based Handcrafted Homes, Inc. The project, undertaken for a Midtown Atlanta homeowner, won the category of Residential Interior Under $75,000 beating submitted projects from eight Southeastern states and the District of Columbia to win the Regional honors. The project will next be entered in the NARI (National Association of the Remodeling Industry) National CotY Awards, where it will compete with projects from all over the United States.

The winning project came about while Handcrafted Homes, Inc. was undertaking a whole-home renovation for a Midtown Atlanta client. The homeowner carved wood as a hobby, and had created a space to enjoy the pursuit in the basement. Recognizing that the single-car garage in the older home was too small for its intended use, Judy Mozen, president of Handcrafted Homes, Inc., suggested transforming the garage into a dramatic, yet functional carving studio.

The new space now contains its own HVAC system, tankless water heater and fine particulate air filter to take care of airborne sawdust. Light and security are provided by carriage doors with a remote-controlled insect screen. Functional additions include a sink, workbench, spot lighting and custom cabinets where the homeowner can store his hand tools. The bookmatched hickory cabinets, Bubinga plank style countertop and Western Red Cedar soffits and beams are both functional and decorative, reflecting the homeowner’s love of beautiful wood.

“Handcrafted Homes, Inc. has been in business for over 40 years, but this is the first carving studio we’ve ever designed and built,” said Mozen. “It’s such a unique and beautiful space, and we were delighted when it won the Atlanta CotY Award in December. We are even more thrilled with this regional recognition and are excited about showcasing it to NARI members on the national stage.”

Each year, NARI presents local, regional and national awards to members who have demonstrated outstanding work through their remodeling projects. This is the highest form of recognition by industry leaders and peers. Judging is based on problem solving, functionality, aesthetics, craftsmanship, innovation and degree of difficulty. The National NARI CotY Awards will be announced in April 2018.
