SMYRNA — The man who was killed Wednesday in a police shooting on South Cobb Drive near Old Concord Road has been identified as Peter Luna-Lopez, 26, of Marietta.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said Thursday Luna-Lopez was the focal point of an ongoing drug investigation involving Cobb County Police, Cobb County deputies and officers from other agencies.

The Cobb County Sheriff's Office said late Wednesday that members of the Marietta, Cobb and Smyrna Organized Crime Unit were trying to conduct a traffic stop around 5:30 p.m. when shots were fired.

The scene was near the Windy Hill Road/South Cobb intersection.

The GBI said Luna-Lopez sped away during the traffic stop when a police officer forced his truck off of the road with her patrol car. Officers then approached Luna-Lopez's car, the GBI said.

"During the incident, officers shot into the truck, hitting Lopez," the GBI said in a news release.

No officers were injured in the shooting, but the Luna-Lopez was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

The GBI did not say if Luna-Lopez fired shots first but said he was found with a handgun.

Luna-Lopez’s body will be taken to the Cobb County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.

Once the GBI's investigation is completed, the case file will be given to the Cobb County District Attorney’s Office for review.

This is the 91st police shooting the GBI has been requested to investigate this year.
