KANE COUNTY, IL — Two Lake in the Hills boys sustained life-threatening injuries following a collision on a Huntley-area roadway known for its multiple crests and dips — and for being the scene of several serious collisions.

On Friday evening, a 2024 blue Hyundai Elantra went off the roadway in the 44W900 block of Dietrich Road in Hampshire Township. Police say the car was headed east on Dietrich Road at a high rate of speed when it went airborne. After going off the road, the car went back into the roadway before sliding sideways and hitting a tree, according to a news release from the Kane County Sheriff's Office.

Two passengers in the car, both 14-year-old boys from Lake in the Hills, became trapped inside after the crash, and emergency crews extricated them from the car.

Emergency crews have been called to several crashes involving fatalities and injuries over the years at the portion of roadway where the collision occurred, police said Monday.

Dietrich Road is a narrow two-lane rural road with narrow shoulders and multiple crests and dips. The speed limit is posted at 40 miles per hour, according to the new release.

The Kane County Sheriff’s Office Investigations Division and Kane County Drone Unit are still conducting the investigation into the crash and have found witnesses who captured the collision on video. The witnesses are being interviewed and the video is still being analyzed, police said Monday.

It does appear that speed played a factor in the crash but no citations or charges have been issues at this time as the collision remains under investigation.
