ALGONQUIN, IL — A side effect of the COVID-19 pandemic could play a part in future housing stock in Algonquin.

As people move away from the city of Chicago, rental units are in higher demand in McHenry County. Algonquin is working to meet that demand, and residential developers are looking to bring their plans to town, according to media reports.

The Trails of Woods Creek has sold 130 of the 279 units and is about halfway through construction of its development south of West Algonquin Road and across from the Boulder Ridge subdivision. Material and labor issues have slowed the construction process, village president Debby Sosine told the Northwest Herald.

Meanwhile, the village is considering allowing another development, Westview Crossing, to be built near the District 158 Square Barn elementary and middle school campuses, according to the Northwest Herald. The proposed 150-unit, single-family development will include several large parks and six different home styles.

The development has not come before the village board for formal approval. In addition, village officials in Algonquin will take a closer look at housing needs in town this summer as they update the village's comprehensive plan.
