ALGONQUIN, IL — District 300 classes will resume Tuesday after school officials were able to address an increase in staff absences and continue in-person learning. But school officials said that may soon change for some schools within the state's sixth largest school district.

"Fortunately, we have been able to cover those absences to return students to in-person instruction. However, please know that we will continue monitoring all schools and update you if we need to change our instruction model dependent upon these variables," according to an update from District 300 Superintendent Susan Haskin, which was posted Monday on the District 300 website.

District 300 cancelled classes Monday to give administrators time to address the staffing shortages. Monday was supposed to be District 300 students' first day back after winter break.

"Due to elevated positive COVID-19 cases based upon the Omicron Variant, District 300 will extend Winter Break by one day," Haskin wrote in a note to parents.

Currently, 90 percent of District 300 staff are fully vaccinated, and 80 percent have received their booster vaccination.

Children within District 300 are being instructed to bring their Chromebooks home every day moving forward in case a switch to remote learning is required.

"The district will continue to review and monitor data throughout the week. Based on current data, I believe all District 300 schools will remain open," Haskin wrote.

Some suburban Chicago school districts have recently announced a switch to remote learning amid a spike in COVID-19 cases.
