District 300 Schools In Session Tuesday

Superintendent Susan Harkin noted that any absences Tuesday due to the weather or road conditions would be marked as excused.

"Parents must evaluate their unique circumstances and decide whether it's safe for their child to attend. If a child remains home due to weather or road conditions, their absence will be marked as excused," Harkin wrote.

CARPENTERSVILLE, IL — School will remain in session Tuesday at Community Unit School District 300 schools.

Early Tuesday, D300 Superintendent Susan Harkin announced classes will remain open but that "ultimately, it is a parent’s responsibility to determine whether to send their child to school if there are potentially hazardous conditions."

"Parents must evaluate their unique circumstances and decide whether it's safe for their child to attend. If a child remains home due to weather or road conditions, their absence will be marked as excused," Harkin wrote.

Parents quickly took to the comments section of the Facebook post to sound off on the decision with some giving Harkin a shout out for her "good work" while others bashed the call, noting they'd be keeping their kid home.

Harkin noted that any parent who decided to keep their child home due to the weather conditions would have that child's absence marked as excused.

"One of the district’s highest priorities is to provide students with in-person instruction. I am pleased that our current and forecasted conditions will permit all schools to remain open," she wrote.

Several other suburban schools announced Tuesday that schools would remain open, including Batavia Public School District 101 and School District U-46. Some, mainly in McHenry County, announced closures Monday afternoon, including McHenry District 15 and public schools in Marengo, Johnsburg and Wonder Lake.

Superintendents with school districts noted they'd be monitoring weather conditions throughout the day and would decide whether to opt for an early dismissal or cancel activities.
