First Measurable Snow Of Winter Expected To Arrive On Tuesday

Algonquin and Lake In The Hills could see up to 2-4 inches of snow by day's end after 287 days without seeing any measurable snow.

LAKE IN THE HILLS, IL — The White Christmas many local residents hoped for never materialized, but as it turns out, the snow wasn’t too far off schedule.

After 287 days without seeing any measurable snow, Algonquin and Lake In The Hills is expected to get its first of taste of winter on Tuesday when Mother Nature delivers its first blast of the white stuff.

According to Weather.com, snow is expected to arrive around 9 a.m. on Tuesday and could stick around for several hours. Hourly precipitation reports indicate that snow showers could be heavy at times and could deliver anywhere from 2-4 inches of snow by the time the season’s first snow finishes falling.

Temperatures will hover around the mid 30s for much of the day while the snow keeps coming until it eventually tapers off Tuesday evening around 8 p.m. The snow could eventually turn to rain or freezing sleet as the day goes on, forecasters predict, which cause slippery roads to develop.

A winter weather advisory will remain in effect until 6 p.m. for McHenry County, which is expected to see higher snow totals that areas closer to Chicago.

This marks the longest stretch the region has gone without seeing snow since 2012 when the Chicago area went 290 days without snow. Chicago surpassed a record of the latest measurable snow arrived in winter after the previous record without at least a tenth of an inch of snow, which was previously December 20.
