Resurfacing Planned For Sunset Park Splash Pad

The renovations were approved during a recent village board meeting.

LAKE IN THE HILLS, IL — The Lake in the Hills Village Board approved a contract with an asphalt company to renovate the splash pad at Sunset Park.

During the meeting last week, village board members voted in favor of awarding a $25,987 contract to Sundeck of Illinois, Ryan McDillon, director of public works for the village of Lake in the Hills, told Patch in an email response. Village officials received two bids for the project, including a much lower bid of $14,000 from M1 Sealcoating, according to village documents.

Staff noted they opted for recommending Sundeck over M1 Sealcoating since M1 had never renovated a concrete pool deck or splash pad surface.

"The company admitted that their field of expertise has been installing asphalt-related projects. Based on their inexperience, staff is uncomfortable recommending M1 Sealcoating despite the potential savings," according to information provided from the village's public works department in the March 26 Committee of a Whole agenda packet.

Meanwhile, Sundeck has been installing concrete coatings since 1970, according to village officials.

The splash pad was built in 2010 and was expanded in three years later. The current surface has not been upgraded, McDillon said.

"It is being resurfaced due to cracking and pitting in the 14 year old original surface, which has not been repaired or replaced to date," he said.

Repairs are expected to completed in the next four to six weeks.
