PINGREE GROVE, IL — Two escaped zebras led state and local police on a safari of their own when the animals escaped from a pumpkin patch's petting zoo Sunday evening, officials told Patch.

In a story originally reported by the Daily Herald, employees at Goebbert's Pumpkin Patch and Apple Orchard in Pingree Grove said the zebras managed to escape from their pen and through the rear doors of a building on the farm's property.

The Kane County Sheriff's Office confirmed deputies were called to Route 47 and Reinking Road at around 5:20 p.m. for a report of zebras in the street. Police said the animals were a young male and female pair.

The search location spanned from Route 47 to Big Timber Road, where farm crews on all-terrain vehicles managed to wrangle one of the animals. The other was caught in a fenced-in pasture off of Sandwald Road, state police said.

It took about two hours to catch the pair, but officials said the zebras were unharmed. According to a statement from Goebbert's, the farm does not own the animals and is investigating how they got out.

A passenger in a car filmed the animals as they ran into a field and posted the moment on Facebook.
