ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL — Chicago area furniture and design company Walter E. Smithe is teaming up with PAWS Chicago, Illinois Comptroller Susana Mendoza and Comptroller's Critters Saturday, Aug. 3 for a special adoption event in Arlington Heights. Adopt-A-Pup-Looza 2019 will run from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Walter E. Smithe's Arlington Heights Showroom, 1775 W. Rand Road, where PAWS Chicago will bring homeless larger dogs and some puppies who need a home and space to run and play, according to a release sent to Patch. All dogs adopted during Saturday's event will go home with their new family straight from the showroom.

According to the event page on the Walter E. Smithe website, all dogs are spayed/neutered before adoption, are micro-chipped, and have received all age-appropriate vaccinations. In addition, each furry friend will be sent to their new home with a leash, collar, a starter bag of pet food, and a VCA Healthy Start certificate.

To prepare potential pup parents ahead of Saturday's event, the event release includes answers to some common pet adoption questions, such as "What are the requirements to adopt from PAWS?"

According to the release, you must be at least 21 years old and provide a U.S. government-issued photo ID (driver’s license or state ID), and verification that you are allowed to have a pet of the breed and size you're interested in where you currently live.

New owners will pay for the adoption, and included in the adoption price is a $100 deposit. This deposit is refundable by PAWS Chicago once obedience training is completed, according to the release. Dogs aged 7 months and older are $300 to adopt, while puppies aged 6 months and younger are $400.

A few more important tidbits to know:

  • You must be able to take your new family member (dog) home on the day of adoption.
  • Bring along all members of your household (including children) to meet the dog.
  • Bring any current pet dogs with you to the event so the two pets can meet.
  • Please be prepared to allow up to an hour with an Adoption Counselor to complete your adoption.

According to the release, Walter E. Smithe has recently been teaming up with organizations like PAWS to bring larger dogs out to their showrooms for these types of events, because the dogs have trouble getting adopted in the city due to space constraints.
