Board of Review is Open for Assessment Appeals for Schaumburg/Palatine

Schaumburg Township and Palatine Township Announce Tax Assessment Appeal Workshops on Oct 23rd and 25th in Hoffman Estates and Palatine

Chicago—The Board of Review has set a deadline of November 3rd for tax appeals for Schaumburg Township residents. Palatine Township is also open for pre-filing appeals. Cook County Board of Review (BOR) Commissioner George Cardenas, Schaumburg Township Assessor John Lawson and Palatine Township Assessor Bill Pohlman have added Assessment and Flooding Appeal workshops on Monday October 23rd from 5-7 P.M and Wednesday October 25th at 6:00 P.M. Taxpayers may appeal their assessment for free with the BOR every year. The BOR independently hears assessment appeals and has the authority to change assessments as a check and balance to the Cook County Assessor’s Office.

The workshops will be held at Schaumburg Township Hall (1 Illinois Blvd Hoffman Estates) and Palatine Township Hall (721 S Quentin Rd) and will provide an opportunity for homeowners to appeal their property assessment and flooding damage and potentially lower their property tax bills. For tax year 2021, 537,000 of Cook County’s 1.8 million Property Index Numbers (PINs) were appealed and 51 percent of individual residential filers saw reductions in their assessments. The only requirement for a taxpayer to appeal a property assessment is a completed complaint form filed before the township appeal period closes. Taxpayers will also have the option of filing a complaint online at www.CookCountyBoardofReview.com.

After facing historic flood damage, particularly in the Western suburbs and neighborhoods of the city, many Cook County residents may be eligible for a reduction in the assessed value of their property due to President Biden’s August 15th disaster declaration. To have flood damage considered in an appeal, taxpayers must file the PTAX 245 form by the normal appeal deadline. Along with the PTAX 245 form, residents will need to provide a description of the damage that occurred, the dates it occurred, the estimated date of completion of rebuilding, and any relevant documentation including photographs, insurance reports, building permits and occupancy certificates.

“The Appeals Workshops bring the services of my office directly to residents, providing more transparency and fairness in the property assessment appeal process,” Commissioner Cardenas said. “Our workshops educate the public about the appeals process and offer property owners the opportunity to appeal their assessments, provide evidence, and talk with analysts without taking time off of work and coming downtown,” added Commissioner Cardenas. “We want the property tax appeals process to be fair, open, and convenient to all Cook County residents.”
