ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL — Brett Harris had quite the weekend. The John Hersey High School graduate was called up to Major League Baseball Friday to play for the Oakland Athletics. One day later, he hit two home runs for the first two hits of his career.

Harris, 25, who graduated from Hersey in 2016, before playing college baseball at Gonzaga University, is the son of Arlington Heights Fire Chief Lance Harris. The younger Harris was drafted by the A's in 2021 and is a third baseman. Brett Harris is the first Hersey graduate to ever play in MLB.

"We wish Brett much success at the major league level," Arlington Heights Mayor Tom Hayes said at Monday night's Village Board meeting during a recognition of the accomplishment. "We hope he has a long and successful career."

According to MLB.com, Harris is just the 11th player in Athletics franchise history to hit his first two career MLB home runs in the same game, and the first since Ramon Laureano in 2018.

Prior to getting called up to MLB, Harris was batting .289, with three home runs and 20 RBI, in 27 appearances for the Triple-A Las Vegas Aviators.

"It's just such a great accomplishment for Brett, and I know what a proud father and family the Harris family is," Hayes said, adding that the fire chief, along with family members, were in attendance for the game.
