Man With Warrant Escapes Cops, Engages In Standoff: Hoffman Estates PD

HOFFMAN ESTATES, IL — A Hoffman Estates resident, who an active warrant for theft, has been charged with two more felonies following an incident Sunday in the 1400 block of Westbury Drive. Dionte Brooks, 26, of the 4500 block of Opal Drive, is accused of two counts of felony theft, a misdemeanor count of resisting arrest, and was arrested at his home following a standoff with police.

Police responded to the 1400 block of Westbury at 7:44 a.m. Sunday, for a report of a suspicious male in a sweatshirt riding a bicycle and attempting to gain entry into a residence. The person, identified as Brooks, was located and police recognized him from the felony theft warrant.

As officers attempted to take Brooks into custody, he reportedly resisted arrest and fled the area. Police pursued Brooks on foot, eventually losing sight of him.

Later, police responded to a known residence of Brooks when a neighbor approached officers on the scene and said Brooks had stolen his phone before entering his own residence in an attempt to elude police. The neighbor identified Brooks and said he had seen what he believed was a handgun in Brooks' waistband.

Police obtained a search warrant for Brooks' home in the 4500 block of Opal Drive, and executed the warrant with the assistance of the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System. Police said Brooks refused to come out of his home, which resulted in a standoff with police, lasting several hours.

Police were in contact with Brooks throughout the day, and he surrendered to police at 4:30 p.m. without further incident. Execution of the search warrant revealed a handgun, body armor, and possible burglary proceeds.
