The investigation revealed that Johnson and the female were driving southbound on Interstate 294 when the road rage incident began. The dispute continued into the 10000 block of Irving Park Road, where both cars had stopped for traffic.

Police said while the cars were stopped next to each other, Johnson got out of his vehicle and proceeded toward the other car. Once there, both brandished guns and exchanged fire, police said. One of the shots struck Johnson in the upper body. The two occupants of the other car were not struck.

The Cook County State's Attorney's Office also concluded there would be no charges brought against the shooter, who had a valid FOID and concealed carry license.
