ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL — Just a year after longtime owners Georgios and Georgene Avgeris died within days of each other, Uptown Cafe is closing permanently. According to a Sunday social media post, the restaurant at 24 E. Miner St. is going out of business after 34 years.

"The day has finally come for us to hang up our hats and rest knowing Uptown Cafe will always hold our fondest memories and have a special place in so many hearts," a post by the Kavathas and Avgeris Family reads. "We love you and thank you from the bottom of our hearts."

Georgios Avgeris, 64, died in September 2022 after a long battle with ALS, and Georgene, 63, passed away several days later. Georgene's brother, Dimitri Kavathas, and other family members kept the breakfast and lunch restaurant open following the deaths of the Elk Grove Village residents.
