BURR RIDGE, IL — Burr Ridge Mayor Gary Grasso is acknowledging the increase in local coronavirus cases. As of Sunday, the number jumped to 117, from 108 a week before — an 8 percent hike, according to county health authorities.

Grasso said Friday the village saw seven new cases in two days. Part of the increase in confirmed cases, he said, may be the result of more testing centers near Burr Ridge. But he said it cannot be overlooked that indoor shopping and dining have been allowed since June 26.

"Public health officials tend to advise of a two- to three-week lag in observing case increases when reopening certain sectors," Grasso said in his regular coronavirus update. "We cannot find comfort in this two-day jump that is also coupled with increases over the last two weeks. That line is going in the wrong direction — that is not progress. We must be on alert, regardless of the number of persons being tested, that the virus is gaining a bigger footprint in our village."

As of Sunday, Burr Ridge had 10.9 coronavirus cases per thousand people. That compares to 6.2 in Western Springs, 6.8 in Darien, 7 in Clarendon Hills, 7.4 in La Grange Park, 8.6 in Elmhurst, 10.5 in DuPage County, 12.5 in Hinsdale, 14.8 in La Grange and 15.2 in suburban Cook County.
