Burr Ridge Sees 16% Rise In Virus Cases: Health Agencies

Village's rate of increase is lower than the state's.

BURR RIDGE, IL — In the last week, Burr Ridge saw a 16 percent spike in the total number of coronavirus cases since the pandemic's beginning.

As of Sunday, Burr Ridge had 451 cases, up by 63 from a week earlier, according to county health authorities. The virus has infected about 4 percent of the town's population.

Last week's increase was lower than the state (nearly 18 percent), Darien and Western Springs (24 percent) and La Grange (26 percent). It was a bit higher than Elmhurst (17 percent) and Hinsdale (13 percent).

Burr Ridge has experienced 24 coronavirus-related deaths since the start of the pandemic, many of them at nursing homes.

"The relationship between underlying medical conditions — and age — remains stunningly high," read a statement last week from the village government, signed by Mayor Gary Grasso. "If you have underlying conditions such as diabetes, obesity, heart or lung disease, or asthma, please be very careful no matter your age. If you have any significant underlying conditions and are over the age of 60, be extraordinarily careful."

As of Sunday, Burr Ridge had 41.9 coronavirus cases per thousand people, worse than most of its neighbors. The figure compares to 27.1 in La Grange Park, 30.2 in Darien, 32.2 in Western Springs, 34.1 in Hinsdale, 34.3 in Clarendon Hills, 35.7 in Elmhurst, 36.1 in DuPage County, 41.2 in suburban Cook County and 43.5 in La Grange (including unincorporated La Grange Highlands).

Nationally, 10.8 million people have caught the virus, up 11 percent from the week before. A total of 244,810 people have died from the virus in the United States.
