Burr Ridge Sees Lower Virus Rate Hike

The trends in new virus cases and deaths are heading down, mayor says.

BURR RIDGE, IL — Burr Ridge saw 32 more coronavirus cases in the last week, for a total of 704 since the beginning of the pandemic, according to county health authorities. That represents a 5 percent hike.

Before the last week, weekly increases had been hovering around 10 percent.

The virus has infected 6.5 percent of the village's population.

Of local coronavirus victims, the mortality rate is 4 percent. Since the start of the pandemic, the village has had 26 coronavirus-related deaths, most of them at nursing homes.

In a statement last week, Mayor Gary Grasso said he asked during a weekly health department report about whether a noticeable Thanksgiving spike in cases had occurred.

"While the answer was "no!", cases are not rapidly declining either," Grasso said. "Deaths are still too high — none are acceptable — but the trend in new cases and deaths is down."

As of Sunday, Burr Ridge had 65.4 coronavirus cases per thousand people. The figure compares to 46.8 in La Grange Park, 50.6 in Darien, 52.7 in Hinsdale, 53 in Western Springs, 58.4 in Clarendon Hills, 59.8 in Elmhurst, 60.2 in DuPage County, 65.8 in suburban Cook County and 73 in La Grange (including unincorporated La Grange Highlands).

Nationally, 17.6 million people have caught the virus, up 10 percent from the week before. A total of 315,260 people have died from the virus in the United States.
