CHICAGO — Chicago has never been short on top-notch restaurants that offer an array of culinary treats to both residents and visitors alike. But the city’s list of award-winning eateries grew on Tuesday night when four restaurants were awarded Michelin stars at a ceremony.

Smyth, which is located in the West Loop, walked away with top honors at Tuesday’s Michelin ceremony when the chic restaurant was awarded three Michelin stars for its exceptional cuisine. According to Michelin, chefs John Shields and Karen Urie Shields offer bold menu offerings that often push the envelope.

The restaurant boasts “sheer creativity” on the part of the chefs – much of which is applied to seasonal produce, some of which is grown in the chefs’ garden. Smyth joined Chicago favorite Alinea as Chicago restaurants that has received the 3-star treatment from Michelin.

Also honored on Tuesday night was Atelier, which is located in Chicago’s Lincoln Square neighborhood, and Indienne (River North), which became the first Indian restaurant in Chicago to receive a Michelin star.

“From Michael Jordan to Indian-born British artist Anish Kapoor, Chicago is no stranger to stars,” Michelin wrote on its website. “However, with tonight's Michelin Guide Star Ceremony, the Windy City just received a couple more.”

Atelier, which is headed up by chef Christian Hunter, received high marks for a “carefully calibrated tasting menu supported by nearby farms and packed with flavor and originality”, Michelin said.

Indienne, meanwhile, always received a Michelin star behind the talents of chef Sujan Sarkar, who delivers an “original, modern vision of Indian cuisine,” Michelin said. “His food may look like pieces of art but taste like familiar favorites pulled from across his vibrant homeland.”

Rounding out the Michelin honorees is Daisies, which received a green star for its Italian cuisine. The popular Logan Square spot and executive chef Joe Frillman offers favorites such as house-made pastas like pappardelle with mushroom ragu or rigatoni with pork ragu and fermented tomato.
