Chicago Loves This Dog Breed The Most

The nation's favorite dog breed doesn't reign supreme in Chicago, a new ranking shows.

Rover’s first annual report ranked the top 20 most popular dog breeds in the country, and revealed which breeds are preferred by different cities.

CHICAGO, IL — All hail, the goldendoodle, king of the canines in Chicago. At least, that’s according to the good folks at Rover, an online marketplace for people to buy and sell pet-care services.

The company recently released its first annual report, which ranked the top 20 most popular dog breeds in the country and in 40 major cities across the U.S. Rover analyzed data from more than a half-million pet parents to determine the different levels of popularity of our furry friends.

The goldendoodle took home the top spot in our city, but you won’t be disappointed with the level of cuteness from the four other most popular dog breeds in Chicago.

The goldendoodle is known for its kind and intelligent personality and low-shedding coats, making it a good dog to train and therefore a good family dog, according to Rover.

Goldendoodles are a hybrid dog, which is a first-generation cross between two breeds — a poodle and a golden retriever — resulting in a 50 percent poodle and 50 percent golden retriever puppy, meaning the goldendoodle isn't a breed itself. According to Rover, it's what breeders call an "F1 Goldendoodle."

"While hybrid dogs are increasingly popular because they can minimize known health problems specific to certain breeds, such as hip dysplasia, their temperaments aren’t as predictable as a standard breed," Rover reported.

The nation’s overall most popular dog breed was the mixed breed, which continually tops lists of the most popular dog types in America, according to the study.

“Regardless of size, color, or personality, bringing a dog home and welcoming them into your family is one of the most enjoyable and rewarding experiences in life,” said Billy Kong, CMO at Rover, in a press release. “Every dog has an abundance of unconditional love to offer.”

Despite the wealth of information available on countless dog breeds, over one-third of owners did no research before choosing, instead selecting their pup based on “love at first sight,” according to Rover.

Here are the top 10 most popular dog breeds in the country for 2019:
