CHICAGO — The cultural and photogenic phenomenon known as “Chicagohenge” will return this weekend, providing local residents the opportunity to fill their social media pages with sun-splashed images featuring Chicago’s downtown area.

As spring officially arrives on Sunday, so does the twice-a-year occurrence in which Chicago’s grid system allows for amazing views of the sunrise and sunset between the city’s buildings.

Adler Planetarium officials said “Chicagohenge” provides a unique perspective of the sunrise and sunset on the city’s east-west streets. The spring equinox — and the days immediately following — sets up the astronomical event that Adler officials call “an amazing celestial alignment” which could stick around until March 23.

The trick is to find a spot at a downtown location either right around sunrise or sunset, which takes place directly to the east and west during the equinox, Adler officials said.

Forecasters predict that sunrise on Sunday will take place at around 6:53 a.m. before it sets in the west around 7:02 p.m. Adler officials said that the only key is making sure the sky is clear enough to get the best possible look at the twice-a-year experience.

"This phenomenon … is a great way to connect with your city and with the sky and also get a cool picture while you’re at it,” Nick Lake, Adler’s manager of theater experiences, said in a social media post.
