Fred Holubow, age 84

Fred Holubow, 84, passed away on Saturday, December 9. Born in Chicago, he was the son of the late Geraldine and Harry Holubow. He leaves behind his devoted wife of 57 years, Sandra (Rosen); was the proud father of Marc (Stacy) and Eric; loving grandfather to Noah, Sydney, Eleanor, and Miriam; and his cherished cat, Shadow. A graduate of the MIT School of Electrical Engineering, Fred also held an MBA in Finance from the University of Chicago. He was a Managing Partner at William Harris Investors, collaborating closely with the late Irving B. Harris. He co-founded Pegasus Associates, served as a General Partner at Starbow Partners, and was a Principal at Petard Risk Analysis. A specialist in biotechnology and pharmaceutical investments, Fred also served on the board of directors for various public companies, including Tecogen, Inc., which researches clean energy solutions. Fred's legacy extends beyond his business acumen. Known for his sharp wit and signature humor, he was a raconteur and a true Renaissance man. His talents ranged from crafting model ships to building telescopes and computers. He was deeply passionate about growing orchids and bonsai trees, and many of his award-winning bonsai trees are in the permanent collection of the Chicago Botanic Garden, often on exhibit. His photography, capturing diverse cultures and natural beauty during his travels, earned him both exhibitions and awards. Besides his deep love for his family, Fred valued education and the arts. He was a Governing Member of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and a benefactor to the Round Table of the Art Institute of Chicago, The Erikson Institute, MIT, the University of Chicago, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He also gave generously through the years to the Jewish United Fund, the Anti-Defamation League, WTTW, the Lincoln Park Zoo, and PAWS Chicago.
