Chicago, IL, Dec. 11, 2023 -- According to the Centers for Disease Control, COVID-19 hospitalizations are up 10 percent week over week since September, and RSV hospitalizations are the highest since 2020. That coupled with China’s pediatric pneumonia and an Ohio outbreak of White Lung Syndrome in children have researchers questioning whether we are not only facing a “Tripledemic,” but also a “Syndemic,” which is a “perfect storm” of multiple serious diseases that negatively impact the spread and recovery processes.

With more people back at work and in close quarters, the Centers for Disease Control expects outbreaks this winter season, and with the triple threat of COVID-19, flu, and RSV, doctors are urging patients to take precautions. David Fletcher M.D., an occupational health specialist at SafeWorks Illinois advises individuals and companies to take measures to prevent the spread of viruses and bacterial-related illnesses this holiday season when travel and parties are at an all-time high.

“It’s important to get the latest vaccine, especially those high-risk patients who have underlying health conditions, or are immunosuppressed,” says Dr. Fletcher. “Anyone who gets the new COVID vaccine now should expect to have ample protection in the new year—the shots take several weeks to reach full effectiveness.”

• Frequently wash your hands with soap and water for at least twenty seconds.
• Avoid touching your face.
• Stay home if you have symptoms and avoid contact with people who are sick.
• Do not share cups or eating utensils with others.
• Clean or disinfect frequently touched surfaces, such as doorknobs, light switches, elevator buttons, and phones.
• Recognize personal risk factors.
