Illinois DOT Reminds Public of Flyover Ramp on Dan Ryan, Eisenhower Expressways

The new ramp is part of the ongoing Jane Byrne Interchange reconstruction project.

From Illinois Department of Transportation: The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) is reminding the public that the new flyover ramp linking the inbound Dan Ryan Expressway (westbound Interstate 90/94) to the outbound Eisenhower Expressway (westbound Interstate 290), part of the ongoing Jane Byrne Interchange reconstruction project, will open to traffic, beginning, weather permitting, Sunday, Dec. 4.

The opening of the flyover ramp will require temporary lane and ramp closures at the following locations this weekend:

  • Starting tonight at 8 p.m., the ramp from inbound Kennedy Expressway (Interstate 90/94) to the outbound Eisenhower will be closed from Madison Street to Halsted Street. A posted detour will direct traffic to take the outbound Dan Ryan, exit at 18th Street, re-enter the inbound Dan Ryan and take the ramp to the outbound Eisenhower. The right lane of the inbound Kennedy also will be closed. All lanes and ramps on the inbound Kennedy will reopen by 5 a.m. Monday, Dec. 5.
  • Starting tonight at 11 p.m., outbound Congress Parkway will be reduced to one lane between Canal Street and Morgan Street until 2 p.m. Sunday.
  • Starting at 9 p.m. Saturday, the right lane on the inbound Dan Ryan will be closed from 26th Street to Harrison Street, with a second lane closing at 11 p.m. All lanes will reopen at 11 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 4.

The new flyover ramp has been under construction since September 2014 and has required some closures at the interchange. The following lanes and ramps will reopen this weekend:

  • The ramps from the Stevenson Expressway (Interstate 55) to the inbound Dan Ryan will be restored to two lanes.
  • All lanes on the inbound Dan Ryan Expressway will reopen.
  • The Roosevelt Road entrance ramp to the outbound Eisenhower will reopen.

Traffic will be able to use one lane on the flyover until the second lane can open with the completion of ongoing work on the outbound Eisenhower in Summer 2018. Even with one lane open, the flyover will improve efficiency, traffic flow and safety for the approximately 400,000 motorists that drive through the Jane Byrne Interchange each day.

The new flyover ramp will replace the existing single-lane, winding ramp with a new two-lane ramp and bridge that begins just south of Roosevelt Road and arches over Harrison Street, the rest of the Jane Byrne Interchange and Halsted Street before connecting to the outbound Eisenhower near Morgan Street. From ramp to ramp, the entire structure will be about one mile in length.
