Meet the Top 50 Highest-Paid School District Superintendents in Illinois

Using the latest available salary data, we've sorted out the state's 50 best- and worst-paid full-time district superintendents in 2016.

The average school administrator salary topped $103,000 in 2016, making it one of the best-paying public positions in Illinois.

But for district superintendents, particularly in the Chicagoland area, base salaries easily could be more than twice that, according to the latest wage data released by the Illinois State Board of Education.

In Kane County, the average base salary for the seven full-time equivalent (FTE) district superintendents was $207,558 during the 2015-16 academic year — the highest in state. The average base pay in suburban Cook County, which had the most superintendents at 137, was $199,411.

Statewide, superintendents last school year earned nearly $107.7 million, though that number doesn’t factor in bonuses, retirement benefits or other benefits, which include the amount in health, dental, life and vision insurance paid by the employer with taxpayer dollars.
