New: Top 25 Most Dangerous Cities in Illinois for 2017

These 25 Illinois cities have the highest violent crime rates, according to Law Street Media's new 2017 ranking.

With a rate of 384 violent crimes per 100,000 people, Illinois ranks as the 21st most dangerous state in the U.S., according to a new report.

Law Street Media published its annual rankings of America’s “Safest & Most Dangerous States” for 2017 using the latest available, reported violent crime data from the FBI. The report also ranks cities with populations of at least 25,000 that have the highest and lowest violent crime rates. Under the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting Program, violent crime is composed of four offenses: murder and non-negligent manslaughter, rape, aggravated assault and robbery.

Before getting into the list of the 25 cities in Illinois with the highest violent crime rate, here’s how the state fared as a whole in 2015 (rate per 100,000 people is in parenthesis):

  • Violent crimes: 49,354 (383.8)
  • Murder and non-negligent manslaughter: 744 (5.8)
  • Rape (revised definition): 4,821 (37.5)
  • Rape (legacy definition): 3,549 (27.6)
  • Robbery: 14,910 (115.9)
  • Aggravated Assault: 28,879 (224.6)
