CHICAGO — A brief respite from winter proved to be short-lived after unseasonably warm temperatures on Saturday disappeared in favor of wintery conditions that are expected to leave the area with a fresh coat of snow on Monday.

The National Weather Service is predicting anywhere from 1-4 inches of snow to arrive Sunday night into Monday. The heavy accumulations are expected to be situated in the northern suburbs near the Illinois-Wisconsin border where 2-4 inches of snow is expected to fall.

The south suburban areas are only expected to see an inch of snow Monday morning before the system moves out. Forecasters are calling for a dry week ahead with temperatures in the 40s before the cold returns next weekend.

Two days after temperatures reached almost 70 on Saturday when much of the area experienced high winds and thunderstorms, temperatures are expected to hover in the mid-to-upper 30s on Monday before temperatures push into the 40s starting on Tuesday.

Temperatures will remain in the 40s before the highs dip into the mid-30s by Friday and will struggle to reach freezing on Saturday, forecasters predict.
