Tornadoes Hit Across Chicago Area: National Weather Service

ILLINOIS — Multiple tornadoes likely touched down Wednesday night across the Chicago area, the National Weather Service said early Thursday.

In addition to a confirmed tornado near O'Hare International Airport, which disrupted hundreds of flights and led to a shelter in place order for travelers, "several" tornadoes likely touched down in other areas on Wednesday, officials said.

Surveyors were out Thursday morning in parts of the Chicago area that saw extensive storm damage, including Huntley, Campton Hills, Elgin, Barrington and other portions of Kane County.

Tornadoes also may have touched down in Countryside, La Grange and Oswego, as well as Indian Head Park, where storms ripped the roof off a building, ABC Chicago reported.

Photos showed major damage to Sinnott Tree Cutting Service in suburban McCook and the roof torn off the nearby Skyline Motel, the Associated Press reported.

A Chicago alderwoman tweeted from O'Hare, saying she and other travelers were sheltered in place. "Everyone is being sent to shelter downstairs in the tunnel. Lots of people in here," Alderwoman Rossana Rodriguez of the 33rd Ward wrote before saying the shelter in place was lifted just before 7:30 p.m.

One motorist also captured footage of an apparent tornado along the I-294 corridor Wednesday evening.

The National Weather Service said it will have more information on the severity of storm damage and the number of confirmed tornadoes in the days to come.
