Deer, Fawn Unfazed by Human Interaction in Deerfield

A Deerfield resident recalls her pleasant run-in with the pair.

The village of Deerfield lived up to its name for one local woman Tuesday morning.

As Courtney Lorentz was walking along her daily route in the village, she noticed a mother deer and her fawn eating flowers in a front garden about a half a block away.

“They looked up and saw me, and then went back to eating the flowers,” recalls Lorentz, who says she woke up that morning grateful “to live in this wonderful and safe community.”

“I took a picture, but didn’t want to scare them,” she said. “But I also didn’t feel like changing my route, so I inched closer. They looked up, saw me, and continued eating. I took another picture. I inched a little closer. They continued eating. I took another picture.

“Closer and closer I made my way toward them, until I was standing directly across the street from them.”

Amazed at the deer and fawn’s “complete lack of fear,” Lorentz came to the only conclusion she could.

“Apparently, this mother deer feels exactly the same way about Deerfield as I do: It’s the perfect place to raise a family.”
