DEERFIELD, IL — While it seems like everyone is happy during the holiday season, many people are struggling to find joy. Rev. Dale Susan Edmonds, pastor at Trinity United Church of Christ, wants to help those having a difficult time.

"I have observed that like compound interest, 'compounding grief' can grow and become debilitating over time," Edmonds told Patch. "Grief upon grief upon grief can easily weigh down one's ability to perceive joy."

Trinity United Church of Christ will host a non-religious event on Friday at the church, located at 760 North Ave. "Longest Night Service: Sheltering Your Heart" will begin at 7 p.m. The event will feature classical music by violin, cello and flute, and poetry readings from Edmonds for "those that are struggling with grief or dissonance with the bright lights and the cheer of the season." The entire community is invited.

Kim Parpala, president of Trinity, and Edmonds said that following the tragic events of July 4 in nearby Highland Park, there are more area individuals struggling this year and they think attending the event will be beneficial to all.

"This is a difficult season for many, many people. In this area, post July 4th. There are many family and friends that will be re-traumatized as loved ones are not present for treasured holidays," Edmonds said. "Decorating may be impossible, or shopping for presents for other family members while leaving that special person off the list."

The professional musical trio of Katherine Hughes (on violin), Marie Bennett (flute) and Dorothy Deen (cello) will provide music at the event.

"Over the course of the hour, you may move through whatever emotions are real for you — but end with a sense of possibility," Edmonds said. "The service is intentionally non-religious so that everyone is welcome in their quest for peace, or simply acknowledgement, in their own way."

The organizers said the space at the church where the event will be held is large enough for attendees to practice social distancing. Masks are not required, but encouraged "given this heightened period of communal illness."
