DEERFIELD, IL — At Monday night's Deerfield Village Board meeting, Mayor Daniel Shapiro condemned last weekend's assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, and an antisemitic protest last month at Congressman Brad Schneider's Highland Park home. Shapiro said both events "have shocked us to our core."

"As I have expressed before, hatred and violence have no place anywhere, especially in Deerfield," Shapiro said. "Let's be able to disagree without being disagreeable, violent, irrational or irresponsible. Let's engage in civility and unite against violence, terror, racism, bigotry and hatred."

Trump was injured Saturday in what the FBI has officially called an attempted assassination during a shooting at the former president's campaign rally in western Pennsylvania.

On June 30, dozens of anti-Israel protesters targeted Schneider's home, awakening neighbors and triggering a police response. As previously reported by Patch, demonstrators showed up to Woodland Road after 2:30 a.m. with a loudspeaker, drums, cowbells and other noisemaking devices. In addition to holding signs and banners, officials said protesters chanted antisemitic comments.

"Our democracy and our discourse are rooted oftentimes in differences," Shapiro said. "Democracy is founded on being able to articulate and then resolve our differences with checks and balances. It cannot be explained away or rationalized by committing awful acts of violence or hatred. We condemn such acts and always will."
