DEERFIELD, IL — It's been a busy year for Jada Harris. In addition to graduating from Deerfield High School earlier this week, Harris has spent the last serving the Village as community relations commission student member. For her contributions, Harris was recognized at Monday's Deerfield Village Board meeting.

"And that was it," joked Deerfield Mayor Dan Shapiro after going through a list of all Harris' accomplishments at the meeting. "We thank you so much for your service."

Shapiro presented Harris a recognition certificate along with some other parting gifts.

Harris was appointed to the position in April 2023. As part of being a community relations commission student member, Harris was on the Community Relations Commission, which "fosters and promotes understanding, mutual respect, cooperation, and positive relations in a diverse inclusive community." The commission also acts in an advisory capacity to the mayor and board of trustees.

Regarding her accomplishments in the position, Shapiro said Harris has been "instrumental" in planning the CRC's Heritage Month program. He also said she started the "Dear in Deerfield" recognition program, while "bringing a student's voice to topics of discussion."

In addition, earlier this year, Harris became a first time blood donor at a drive promoted by CRC. She also served on a three-person team that selected her successor, Lexie Segal, who was approved by the Village Board for appointment earlier in the meeting. Segal will work with Joshua Duby, who will continue in that position.

At DHS, Harris was the editor of the school's student newspaper, Deerprints. She was also a student council member, on the debate team, and a student representative to the Township High School District 113 board of education.

"It's been a great honor getting to serve on the board. It's been a great experience getting to see the behind-the-scenes of Deerfield and I really appreciate the board giving students a voice," Harris said. "I can't wait to see all the great things that lie ahead for Deerfield."
