DEERFIELD, IL — Last weekend, the Deerfield High School girls basketball team made school history by playing in the Illinois High School Association tournament for the first time ever. The Warriors (29-7) saw its season conclude in the 3A semifinal round to Lincoln and eventually finished fourth in the state.

Though the campaign is now officially over, the Nicole Keith-coached players are still receiving accolades. Senior guard Lexi Kerstein, who will play college basketball next fall at the University of Vermont, has been named to the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association All-State First Team. The team captain joined the 1,500-point club and became the leading scorer in the program's history last month.

"She leads by example. We call her 'The Bulldog.' If you want somebody to go down and get you to the free throw line, Lexi is going to drive and do that," Keith recently said of Kerstein. "She's our best girl coming off curls, coming off drives. She's that girl for us."
