DEERFIELD, IL — Construction work on the Edens Spur due to begin in mid-March is set to close Pfingsten Road to through traffic for months between Lake Cook and Dundee roads.

The Illinois Tollway's Eden Spur improvement project began in 2018 — the 70th anniversary of the roadway — and it is scheduled to be complete by the end of the year. Remaining work includes pavement replacement and removing and swapping out five bridges.

Among the bridges set to be replaced is the Pfingsten Road bridge spanning the Edens Spur. Plans for the new bridge call for a wide deck to better accommodate pedestrians, cyclists and cars traveling over the tollway.

According to a project summary from the Illinois Tollway, the wider bridge will have a larger sidewalk on its northbound side and a path separated by a barrier on its southbound side, which will tie in to a multi-use path in the future.

The work also includes the addition of a new water main underneath the Edens Spur at Pfingsten Road, which will provide a connection between Northbrook and Deerfield.

In a statement, village staff said they expect Pfinsten Road to be fully closed for at least four months. According to the Tollway, it could remain closed to traffic for as much six months.

The scheduled start date for the roadwork is March 16, according to the village. A map of a detour published by the Tollway directs drivers to use Waukegan Road as an alternate route between Dundee and Lake Cook roads.
