Police Report Coyote Sightings in Deerfield

Village reminds residents animal is protected and can only be dealt with if sick, threatening or injured.

The village will always have a strong connection to deer, but another wild animal is causing concern for some residents of Deerfield.

The Deerfield Police Department has received several complaints of coyotes in the area, according to a Sunday night post on their Facebook page.

“They are considered protected wildlife and we cannot intervene unless they are sick, injured or attacking a person or pet,” the post read.

From the village website regarding Coyotes in Lake County:

“Coyotes in Illinois are protected under the Illinois Wildlife Code. In urban or suburban areas, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources recommends hiring a Nuisance Wildlife Control Operator, who is licensed by the State of Illinois to remove the coyote from the area. By Illinois law, the animal can only be removed if it is causing property damage or is a risk to human health or safety.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources has recommended the following:

1) Contact the local Nuisance Wildlife Control Operator

2) Contact the District Wildlife Biologist. If you intend to remove the coyote yourself because you must first qualify for a Nuisance Animal Removal Permit.

3) Contact local police for sick, threatening or injured animals only.”
