The city says the work is on schedule, but a resident wonders why no work has been done for weeks.

The construction project on First Street is set to end later this month, an Elmhurst spokeswoman said.

ELMHURST, IL – First Street in central Elmhurst has been under construction this summer, with at least one nearby resident feeling it has lasted too long.

Concrete replacement is expected to take place next week, followed by roadway resurfacing the week after, city spokeswoman Kassondra Schref said in an email Thursday.

In a later email, Schref said the contractor was required under the contract to complete the project the week of Aug. 26.

"Per the contract, we are ahead of schedule, and foresee no issues meeting these dates," Schref said.

Elmhurst resident Brett Lowe, who lives near First Street, said no work has been done on the project for at least three weeks. He said he and his neighbors wondered what was going on.

"It's been a gravel road," Lowe said in an interview. "There is dust everywhere."

The project, he said, started in early June, with the contractor tearing up the street, putting in a pipe and laying down gravel.
