FRANKFORT, IL — Seniors in Frankfort who find themselves with a little extra time this summer and want to help out in their community can volunteer for the Frankfort Police Department's Seniors on Patrol Program.

The Seniors on Patrol program runs from May through October, according to Frankfort Police Officer Mark Thompson, who is in charge of the program. Those who wish to participate must pass a background check, Thompson said.

Participants in the program will assist Frankfort police with radar details, handicap parking violations and walking details on Old Plank Road Trail. Participants are not authorized to hand out citations but will report violations to Frankfort police, who will then mail out warnings, Thompson said.

"Participants are volunteers, and during a detail they are accompanied by a Frankfort Police Officer," Thompson said. "Their role is to assist our police department through the details and report information to the designated officer."

Participants usually complete three details a month from a calendar of scheduled details, Thompson said.

Seniors on Patrol is a volunteer program, so participants will not be paid, Thompson said, though participants are given a light blue shirt with a blue star on the left side of the chest. Around the star are the word "Seniors on Patrol Frankfort Pd." On the back of the shirt, in bold capitalized letters, is the word "Volunteer."

An orientation for the program is scheduled for 11 a.m. April 27.
